Shoreham Coastguard issues quicksand warning for Lancing beach
Shoreham Coastguard has warned of a patch of quicksand around Widewater Court in Lancing.
Posting on social media, the emergency service has advised everybody to take care in the area when walking along the beach below the high water mark.
It follows widespread discussion on Facebook about the appearance of a patch of quicksand.
One beachgoer said he had been walking along that patch of coastline his whole life, but had never encountered 'anything close to as dangerous as this'.
Quicksand forms in saturated, loose sand which is disturbed by, for example, someone stepping on it.
The loose, wet sand then loses its integrity and can drag people or their pets in.
In some cases, quicksand can become so loose that people have been known to float once they reach a certain depth.
