A police spokesman said: “The lorry driver, a 60-year-old man from Midhurst, was unhurt.

“He was later arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and has been bailed until April 18 while enquiries continue.”

The A272 was closed between its junctions with Kingspit Lane and Crimbourne Lane for nine hours while emergency services were at the scene.

Sergeant Neil Cox, of the Arundel road policing unit, said: “Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen what happened. They should email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting serial 846 of 18/02.”
