Should Sussex towns have '˜swear-free' zones?

With news that a council in the North of England has outlawed swearing in public at a popular area of the city, we are asking whether towns in Sussex should do the same.

Salford council is enforcing a Public Space Protection Order for the Quays area in a bid to curb anti-social behaviour.

Part of the order says it will be deemed a criminal offence if anyone is caught ‘using foul and abusive language’.

Local residents responded to the consultation about whether to introduce this order, with 76 per cent in favour of the order and 94 per cent agreeing with a ban on causing general disturbance including being abusive to other persons, using foul language, being rowdy and inconsiderate.

Comedian Mark Thomas, who went to Christ’s Hospital School, near Horsham, is performing at the arts centre at the Quays and has sent the council a list of words he intends to use to check if they breach the order.
