Silent films bring village’s history to life

FERRING Village Hall was packed to capacity for a film show documenting the village’s history.

Silent black and white films dating from as far back as the 1930s were shown at Ferring History Group’s latest meeting.  

The films were made by F.R. Claridge, a former Ferring estate agent, and now belong to his son Geoffrey Claridge.

In recent years, Geoffrey has transferred the films onto DVD and has added a voice-over.

Ed Miller, secretary of the Ferring Film Group, provided information about the films in Geoffrey’s absence. After the films, Ed showed historic photographs, prompting comments from the audience.

Ferring History Group committee member Eileen Godfrey said: “Everyone was grateful to Geoffrey Claridge for allowing us the privilege of watching his father’s films.

“The evening was a huge social success with people chatting well after all the chairs had been stacked and the cups and saucers washed up.”
