SNOW DAY: On the roads, school closures '“ Updated Friday, January 8

EFFORTS are being made to keep the main roads ice-free and many schools have confirmed they will remain closed today (Friday, January 8).

On the roads

West Sussex County Council gritters are in action throughout the day and night to keep major roads ice-free.

Worthing Borough Council workers have been clearing pavements working from the town centre, outwards.

There are now national protocols in force to ensure that local authorities share supplies of salt, so the county cannot immediately re-fill the hippo bags distributed around the county because there may be heavy demands on its stock over the next few days.

Derek Whittington, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, said: "The major road network simply has to have priority because of the need to keep vital services moving including deliveries to supermarkets and hospitals.

"We have sufficient salt for our roads to last into next week, and are dependant on a delivery after that.

"In the meantime we are working with districts and boroughs to try and obtain coarse sand to use on problem areas such as shopping precincts, which will work equally as well as salt."
