That is according to a research from an insurance group, which found that one in four people admitted to doing just an hour or less of cleaning each week.

Those living in the South East however said they completed five hours and 37 minutes of chores like vacuuming and tidying, topping the list and far higher than homeowners in the East Midlands, found to be the messiest and undertaking three hours and 46 minutes of cleaning per week.

It comes from research done by The Co-operative Insurance which suggests keeping a home clean is no longer a priority.

It found that people aged between 45 and 54 years were most likely to keep up with their chores, while those aged 25 to 34 years were the least likely.

Caroline Hunter, head of home insurance at The Co-operative Insurance, said: “The research shows that a people are hiding their rubbish away, but over filling areas such as a loft or boiler cupboard is a potential cause of fires.

“We sometimes deal with claims for accidental damage to ceilings caused by a misplaced foot in the loft as a result of trying to find suitcases for the holidays.”

The research also found that the spare room is unsurprisingly people’s favourite place to hide clutter, with 12 per cent feeling the bedroom is the least important place to clean.

Of those that rarely clean, one in five preferred to pay someone else to do it and 19 per cent said they didn’t keep things spic and span because they didn’t want to use cleaning products.
