Southwick Opera's latest show

MASCAGNI'S classic work Cavalleria Rusticana is being performed by Southwick Opera as part of an evening of operatic highlights.

The performance, which will be played out on the stage of the Barn Theatre, Southwick Community Centre, starts with 17th-century compositions, moving through to the 20th-century composer Menotti, who died earlier this year.

This sets the stage for Mascagni's Sicilian drama of betrayal and retribution. It tells the story of Turrido (Marcel Scherri), who is lamenting his formerly beloved Lola (Charlotte Shorthouse), now married to Alfio (Frank Jordan).

Turrido's jealous new sweetheart, Santuzza (Yvonne Fair), tells Alfio that Turrido and Lola have been together and the opera ends in a dramatic duel between the two men.

Cavalleria made its composer an overnight sensation and includes the famous Easter Hymn and Intermezzo.

Following leading roles within the company, this will be Anthea Myall's directorial debut, while Michael James will be the show's musical director.

Cavalleria Rusticana will be performed at the Barn Theatre from Tuesday, May 1, until Saturday, May 5, starting at 7.30pm.
