Southwick teaching assistant retires

A TEACHING assistant is putting away her books and pens after 18 years.

Angela King retired as a learning support assistant at Manor Hall First School, Southwick, on Friday after 18 years, having taught hundreds of children over that time.

And her connection with the school is even longer '“ about 32 years '“ as her four children went there.

Mrs King, who turned 60 on Tuesday, started helping at the school all those years ago as a volunteer mum, before training to become a teaching assistant, and later on as a learning support assistant.

She said: "I teach small groups of children and individuals who need support and help. I love my job and the school is a fantastic place to work.

"I have seen so many changes over the years in education, but, basically, the children are the same, although they do question more these days than when I first started.

"I will miss them and the staff. It will be strange not to be at school."

Mrs King plans to travel around Britain in her camper van and do things around the home during her retirement. But, as she lives close to the school, she will never be far away.

"I am sure I will get a few calls to come and help and I will see the children walking to and from school, so it is not a complete break."

Each class made her a special card and a model of her camper van, and she was also presented with flowers.

A retirement tea has been planned for Mrs King after Easter with current staff and former colleagues she used to work with.

She said: "I am looking forward to that. It will be something of a reunion and I can't wait to see some old faces again."
