The jubilee-themed headwear was donated to Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Worthing, St Richard’s and Southlands hospitals, by Elsie Campbell, whose daughter is a midwife.

She wanted to help to mark the jubilee celebrations, and to help newborns to be warm and comfortable.

Proud dad Adam Wells was at the hospital to support his partner Charlotte Weigh, and was draped in his own Union Flag. However, he said the name George was not chosen for the royal connection.

Adam, from Worthing, praised the hospital care.

He said: “The midwifes were all fantastic, the care second to none. Nothing was too much trouble and they were all so kind and polite.”

Elsie Campbell said: “I think the jubilee is a fantastic national event and I wanted to help mark such an occasion. My daughter is a midwife, so making these bonnets seemed appropriate – I hope it will make a nice keepsake for the families, and a reminder that their baby came into the world on such an important day for our country.”
