In connection with the BBC’s Stargazing Live week, Worthing Astronomers put-on the free event, in an attempt to raise awareness of the solar system and beyond.

Over 20 different telescopes were set-up on the seafront for visitors to peer through.

Jupiter and the moon were two of the main points of interest.

Club member Steve Bassett said: “It was brilliant, we had a really good night on Saturday.

“It was amazing to see how many people had never looked at the moon close up before.

“I think people take such things for granted but there is an awful lot to see up there and I think everyone enjoyed learning more about it.”

Clubs around the country set-up events in conjunction with the BBC’s programme and Mr Bassett believes it has raised the profile of astronomy.

He said: “It was probably one of our best events we have done down there, as we generally do two or three events a year.

“It was quite bright with the street lights, which limited what we could see but Jupiter and the moon could be seen quite clearly, particularly on Saturday.”

Worthing Astronomers meet regularly at a variety of locations. The club has several hundred members but is looking for more.
