Squash club to stage erotic dance nights

Erotic dancing events proposed at Carriages Squash Club in Station Road, Hellingly, have set pulses racing.

Villagers are angry at the plans.

Parish councillor Barby Dashwood-Hall lives in Church Lane, 250 metres away from the club.

She said she did not know anyone in Hellingly who wanted late-night entertainment at the site.

She added: 'I feel really sorry for those who live close, the sound is going to be awful for them.

'I was against the licensing application as I feel it is inappropriate for a rural area.

'I have no objection to somebody making a living but my objection is the noise.

'The Squash Club has no sound proofing.'

Cllr Dashwood-Hall also serves on Wealden District Council's licensing committee and she was against the application which was granted consent on September 26.

At the end of August she heard a private party going on at the club from her home and the noise was very loud.

She said: 'The noise was ridiculous.

'Whether it's live or recorded entertainment there is nothing to stop the noise.

'There has been a terrific amount of local objection.'

John Garvican, county councillor for the village, condemned the club opening its doors to erotic dance nights once a month.

He said: 'My personal position is that i deplore it and I think that this shows a reduction in our moral standards.

'I am also speaking as a Christian and a member of a local church.'

A licence to sell alcohol has been given to the club between 11am and 11pm every day, with an extension to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

The adult entertainment was included in the licence.

Jonathan Smith, the owner of Carriages, was unavailable to comment.
