Hundreds of pounds were stolen from Candle Scentral in South Street last night (Thursday) after burglars gained entry through the ceiling.

Retailer Charlie Yates, 22, said he is shocked after finding around £500 had been stolen from his shop overnight, along with hundreds of pounds worth of candles and an iPad.

He said: “They went through the Iceland car park, into the back of the shop upstairs and smashed through the ceiling – there’s a massive hole there now. Around 10.30pm last night they unplugged the CCTV cameras, so we have no footage of them.

“Bearing in mind we’re next to a bank, I find it hard to believe that someone would want to target a little candle shop.”

Mr Yates opened for business at the end of July, following the closure of Yankee Candle in town.

“It’s my new business and I didn’t think something like this would happen. There’s a lot of damage to the shop,” he said.

Currently Mr Yates is waiting for Sussex Police’s forensics team to investigate the scene, but business is open as usual.

A spokesman for the police said: “Police were informed of a break-in at a shop in South Street, Worthing overnight between Thursday (October 29) and morning on Friday (October 30).

“The door had been smashed and some cash stolen.”

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact police on quoting serial 249 of 30/10.
