PUBLIC INFORMATION NOTICES: Warning of BOGUS ‘COUNCIL’ CONTRACTORS - East Sussex Highways had reports last month of bogus contractors knocking on peoples doors, claiming they are there to cut back overgrown trees or hedges on behalf on the Highways department and requesting payment for their service. Needless to say, none of our associated contractors would ever approach people offering any service in this way and request they pay for it. The department are working closely with our Trading Standards team to act on these reports and quickly follow them up. Their advice to the public is never to deal with ‘cold callers’ who offer to carry out work on behalf of E.S.C.C. and not to feel pressurised into making a decision on the spot. These claims can always be verified by contacting the Highways Department on 0345~6080193 or Trading Standards Services directly on 01323~463430. If you feel threatened, please contact the Police on 101 or 999. Everywhere we look, be it on foot or by car or bus, we see evidence of road works. Sometimes we see the odd little spray paint directions that surround the numerous and varied pot holes that abound throughout our area and which never appear to get repaired in the places that we see as important. The East Sussex Highways Dept. teams are out and about all across East Sussex and since January 2nd have filled in 6747 potholes.- That’s an awful lot of pot holes ! Please take extra care when walking or driving by pot holes or road works, especially when the weather conditions are not in your favour. COULD YOU HELP SAVE A LIFE ?: All over the region, Rother Responders are appealing for people to join their life-saving group. The Community First Responder Scheme is operated by a team of volunteers who have been trained to respond to emergency calls through the 999 system in conjunction with the Ambulance Service. Team Leader, Tracy Pepler said “ “Rother Responders are hoping to expand further and we are looking to hear from people who might be interested in joining this voluntary group who live in the rural communities where we currently do not have responder coverage”. BREDE SCOUT GROUP: Are your children already complaining that ‘they’re bored, & there’s nothing to do’ ? Are you looking for an outside school activity for your young offspring that will help keep them entertained, and safe whilst introducing them to worthwhile interests. If this is the case, why not consider enrolling them in the Scouts Group. This long established and very popular and lively movement meet on Mondays in the Scout Hut, Stubbs Lane, in Brede. Beavers welcome both boys and girls from 6 years onwards and meet from 5.15pm to 6.15pm. The lady to contact for further information of this is Catherine Southgate on:07833065028. On Tuesdays, the 1st.Brede Scouts meet from 7.pm until 9.pm at the same venue, and this is for any young child aged 10.5 and over and for further details of this group, please contact Andy Bishop on 07833065028. All the sections have vacancies and your child would be warmly welcomed into the group. Scouting is a great way of helping a child to reach it’s potential in a safe and fun way, whilst encouraging social interaction.in a friendly manner. Some very important lessons in life have been learnt at just such group activities. It also can be great fun !

RYE BAY SCALLOP WEEK: ADVANCE NOTICE.- This very popular and ever expanding event is not just about eating scallops. - although that’s probably the main, best reason for holding this event, - it also hosts talks, music, and many varied cookery classes. There will also be several delicious demonstrations of tastings and markets for buying them - and of course, there is also the eating ! You’d be amazed at just how many different ways there are to include them in a culinary delight and if all you know of scallops is the unstable shells that were their home and were then used as trendy wobbly ashtrays way back in the ‘50’s in smoky coffee bars, think again. To kick start this annual festival why not pop into the Queens Head, in Rye on Saturday February 21st and enjoy not only a 3 course meal of which scallops are a feature, but you’ll be given a welcoming glass of wine whilst being entertained with a selection of shanties and other tales of the sea, all ably performed by the Rye Bay Crew. ROTHER RAMBLERS: Still enjoying their stomps around our beautiful countryside, the fellow members of the Rother Ramblers Association have another two walks arranged for our enjoyment. The first will take place on Saturday February 14th and is a mere 6.5 mile stroll around Bedgebury. Meeting at Pillory Corner car park OS EXP 136 TQ711321 (SatNavTN57QG) at 9.30am. This promises to be quite a delightful stroll with stunning scenery all around. There will be a short refreshment break midway and for all further information please contact Lionel & Rita on 01424~752452 who will be your ‘Walk Leaders for this journey. Walk no: 2 is a slightly longer stroll being an 8 mile Lamberhurst circular via Goudhurst. This also will have some lovely views to enjoy along the way. ESBS-BONFIRE SOCIETY NEWS: Just a quick and gentle reminder that the Staplecross Bonfire Society will be holding their A.G.M. on Monday February 16th, beginning at 7.30pm at the Cross Inn, Staplecross. This will be followed by their usual monthly meeting directly after. This popular and very friendly society which does so much for charity and local causes are always ready to welcome new members. The group have a busy year ahead of them with lots of great events for us to enjoy, so they would really appreciate the additional use of a few extra pairs of hands. Please do see if you can help them out in any capacity - there are a number of ways that you can lend a hand, perhaps by just rattling a bucket or directing the car parking at one of their events. EWHURST PARISH ALLOTMENTS ASSOCIATION: The Ewhurst Parish Allotment Association would like to give notice that it’s AGM will take place on Tuesday February 17th at 7.30pm at St. Mark’s church room, Northiam Road, Staplecross for the election of the Association’s Officers from the Membership, Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and up to four (4) Committee Members. The plots are situated in Lordine Lane, Ewhurst Green and are already fenced with a water supply, and a shed allocated for each plot. There is also parking available. The allotment holders are a friendly and helpful group of like-minded ‘growers’ who would love for you to come along and join them, so please give Jacqui a call.

STAPLECROSS LUNCHEON CLUB: Time passes so quickly when you’re busy and none more so than those clever chefs of the Staplecross Dining Group. Once more the members of this small but very friendly club will be meeting at the Village Hall, Northiam Road in Staplecross on Wednesday February 18th at 12.30pm where they will, for the small cost of £5:50 per person, sit down to a delicious 2 course lunch followed by tea/coffee. On the menu for this month will be home made Cottage Pie with all the trimmings followed by another firm family favourite Spotted Dick, with either custard or sauce. Rules are few, --you have be over 50 years young to attend and promise, (wherever possible) to attend each month. This helps to reduce the amount of food wastage, as well as unnecessary cost in time, money and effort. There is no entrance fee and each and every meal is so delicious you’ll wish you could come every week!. MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE: The Mobile Library service will be arriving in Ewhurst Green on Thursday February 19th from 11.10am and will depart at 11.40am. Hopefully you would have remembered the Mobile Library service has recently altered it’s schedule and this journey has now separated from Staplecross & Cripps Corner. The change of route which now includes Ewhurst Green is Route 12.Week 1 and is within the Robertsbridge to Burwash journey. But no matter where it comes from or where it goes to when it leaves our villages, as long as we still have this service, then please let’s make the most use of them while we can. Opening a book can open up a whole new world for you, - try it and see.

CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday February 15th. Sunday before Lent. at 9.30am. This service will include Holy Communion. A service at St. Giles church, Bodiam will follow directly after at 11.15am. This service will include Holy Communion. There will be NO SERVICE at held today at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross.
