The charity has just launched its 2014 events programme, with a range of special days from May to September, as well as regular practical projects.

A free training evening to enable naturalists to collate wildlife sightings online sets the ball rolling on Wednesday, May 14, at 6pm at Steyning Athletics Club, in Charlton Street.

The iRecord means naturalists can note their findings and have them checked by experts. They will then be made available to support research and decision-making. Charles Roper, from the Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre, will explain more at Steyning Athletics Club.

Later this month, there are several collaborations with the Steyning Festival, as well as the chance to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the scheme with project manager Matthew Thomas on Friday, May 30.

Musical entertainment is on offer in June at The Old Flint Barn, courtesy of SDS Acoustic, and imaginations will be running wild at a creative writing workshop on June 7.

As the season continues, there is a bumblebee walk, art day, glow-worm hunt and a butterfly hunt.

Children aged eight to 14 can learn bushcraft skills and runners can join in the Ranger Romp in September.

The biggest event on the calendar is the annual Big Picnic on Sunday, September 7, 12.30pm to 3.30pm.
