Steyning Festival of Sport: full report

AGE triumphed over youth at this year's Steyning 15-mile walking race,70-year-old Arthur Thomson crossing the line in first place.

The veteran walker, who is 71 this month and was third in the race last year, clocked up a winning time of two hours, 23 minutes and 40 seconds during the Festival of Sport on Easter Monday.

Ron Penfold finished second in 2hr 28min 29sec and Laurence Dordoy a close third in 2hr 29min 25sec. The 19 walkers set off for the 85th race, organised by Steyning Athletic Club, from the clock tower in

Steyning High Street, walking through Ashurst, Partridge Green, Henfield, Upper Beeding and back across the finishing line in Steyning.

Fifty minutes earlier, 135 competitors from around the country had taken

part in the popular duathlon of a seven-kilometre run, a 35km cycle and a 5km run around Steyning and the surrounding villages.

Toby Jameson, of Total Fitness Bath, won in 1hr 34min 10sec, closely followed by Paul Holdaway, from Team Lifestyle, just 38 seconds behind.
