The Good Cook Shop, in Warwick Street, Worthing, has created a replica of a trench from the first World War in the store window.

They will also be donating 20 per cent of the sale price of their Poppy related products to the Royal British Legion.

Shop owner David Goodenough said: “The trench is intended to be a poignant representation of the human cost of war through the personal belongings left behind, and includes a muddy puddle and footprints suggestive of a soldier going over the top.

“We have included various items including a period pocket watch stopped at five minutes to eleven and a broken glasses frame - supplied by our neighbour - Jeremy Silverthorne, a helmet and soldiers prayer book, supplied by Worthing museum, plus a shell casing, a bayonet, a “Princess Mary Tin” from Christmas 1914 and other items.

“One of our ex-employees, who is a freelance illustrator has even created a letter from home to a soldier, which is trodden into the mud.”

Out of the trench, past the barbed wire and sandbags there is real grass growing and a display of silicone poppies against a green backdrop.

The Good Cook Shop will be entering the window into a national competition ran by their supplier, Charles Viancin.

The top prize is £250 and Mr Goodenough has confirmed that if they win they will donate the winnings to the Poppy Appeal.
