STORM: Worthing weather update and picture gallery

EMERGENCY sea defences are in place after storm surges battered Worthing seafront over the weekend.

Temporary steps were taken by Worthing Borough Council on Saturday after over-topping of the sea caused problems along the promenade.

The A259 near Brooklands was temporarily closed after shingle washed onto the road, while the beach office was flooded by the surges.

High seas also caused grating at the end of Worthing Pier to be lifted but damage is not thought to have been caused.

While no flood warnings remain in place in Worthing, waves of two to three metres and slight tidal surges were expected today (Monday, January 6). .

Foreshore inspector Roy Stephens said: “We are only going to get 10 centimetre surges on top of what we normally get, which isn’t much. But we are going to have two to three metre waves.”
