Street event raised funds for a hospice

The chairman of Arun District Council, Ann Smee, and her husband and consort, Bill, attended the festivities at Woodlands Park last Saturday.

Only the party co-ordinator, Trevor West, and his wife, Christine, were in on the surprise after being tipped off by site owner and Arun councillor Stephen Haymes, who is also the chairman of Yapton Parish Council.

Homeowners on the site decorated it with red, white and blue bunting.

Retired postman Trevor, 64, moved there with Christine about ten months ago.

He said: “I was delighted by the enthusiasm of my neighbours when I asked if they would like to have the street party.

“I can remember how excited I was when my family attended a street party for the Queen’s coronation back in 1953. It was great fun.”

Cllr Mrs Smee and Mr Smee were given a warm welcome by the residents and treated to homemade cakes, sandwiches and trifle. The event raised £113 for Chestnut Tree House hospice.
