Street Velodrome returns to Worthing

Cyclists were in for a speed-filled treat this weekend as the Street Velodrome returned to Worthing for a second year.

A track stretching only 24 metres on one side, amateur and professional cyclists of all ages have had the chance to test their speed and agility for the past three days at the track in Beach Gardens.

The Street Velodrome is a seven-part series where the track travels around the UK, allowing people to take part in various towns.

Among the touring cyclists was Worthing woman Rowena Price, 37, who last year won in the amateur category, and has now gone professional.

She said: “It just gets better and better all the time, and this is my home run, so I do want to impress. I used to watch a lot of cycling on TV, but I was never going to get on the track. Then the velodrome came to Worthing, so I decided to give it a go and won.”

In the children’s category, 12 year-old Jaden Randall , who tours with the Velodrome, said: “It is really good, the adrenaline for the races and the speed the other riders go at is incredible.”

Carl Thompson, series director said: “Worthing is a great place for a race. The way the event was received last year by the council and how well it was organised, it was the right place for us. For us, we are all about showing new people how to get into the sport and the support that comes with it.”

The three-day event included a dedicated schools’ day on Friday, free public have-a-go sessions on Saturday, and competitive races yesterday, with two-lap time trials and three-lap races.

Sarah Linfield, marketing officer at Lancing College Preparatory School, which was an event sponsor, said: “It is great to be involved in such a great event that is happening in Worthing. The Year 6 children came down and had a fantastic time.”
