‘Struggling’ night-time economy offered a lifeline

WORTHING’S ‘struggling’ and ‘sorry for itself’ night-time economy could be boosted by the launch of a promotional magazine.

The Town Centre Initiative has proposed the publication in a bid to attract more people into the town’s pubs, clubs and restaurants.

Industry figures say the action is needed to highlight the night-time offer to the pubic.

One Club general manager James Lanz said: “Business is ticking over but generally the whole of the town seems a little bit sorry for itself.

“My boss approached the TCI and asked them if they could do something for the night-time economy.

“Things like Birdman are great for the day time trade but there is nothing of benefit for the night-time businesses.”

The TCI has set-aside funding for the magazine, which would offer businesses the chance to advertise upcoming events and offers.

It is also hoped the recent lifting of the saturation policy, which put a limit on the number of establishments which could open, will help.

Mr Lanz said: “A few years ago, maybe there were too many venues, but it seems to have gone the other way now.

“Although there is less competition for us now, there is also less choice for the customer. The saturation policy didn’t help with this.”
