The campaign claims that people who stay smoke-free for 28 days are five times more likely to quit smoking for good.

Worthing borough councillor Major Wye said: “I am a cabinet member for health and wellbeing, so it obviously doesn’t go down too well that I smoke.

“I’m also turning 71 next month, so agreed to take part in Stoptober on the condition that everyone would sponsor me to do so.

“All the money will go towards the Building a Home to Remember appeal, something I’m proud to be an appeal patron of.

“It’s a very worthy cause that will benefit thousands of people in the local area. I don’t have much money, but what I do have is time.

“I won’t raise the £500,000 needed, but what I do raise, I know will go a long way.”
