Student named as crash victim

ONE of the women who died following the A27 Selmeston pile-up was a student at the Eastbourne campus of Brighton University.

Jessica Nixon-Lea was living in Latimer Road while carrying out her studies as a psychology and sociology student.

The 22-year-old, from Cirencester, Gloucester, was the driver of a Renault Clio which was involved in Tuesday's (April 24) crash.

Three cars were involved in a head-on collision with a lorry, which resulted in the road being closed for four-and-a-half hours.

A second woman, named as Gemma Lee, 20, from Southwater Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Miss Lee, a passenger in a Fiat Seicento, was a student at Plumpton College.

A 22-year-old Eastbourne man who was a passenger in the Renault Clio sustained slight injuries.

Four other men involved in the collision suffered minor injuries and were reported to have been taken to either the DGH or Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

The 22-year-old male driver of the 3.5 tonne Ford Transit Luton van suffered slight injuries and was later arrested in connection with causing death by dangerous driving.

He was bailed pending further enquiries.

In the aftermath of the crash, Eastbourne MP Nigel Waterson had pledged his support to a resident who has petitioned the Prime Minister for A27 improvements.

Sean Noon contacted Mr Waterson after setting up the online campaign which calls for a dual carriageway between Polegate and Lewes.
