The individuals gained two seats to take them to five on the 16 strong council to put them in a tie with the Liberal Democrats as the largest group.

It is believed to be the first time in recent memory that councillors without any political links, have been in such an influential position on the council.

One of the Independent councillors, Sandra Daniells, said: “I am delighted the Independents have put up such a good show. I picked up on the doorstep that people were getting fed up with politics at the local level of government.

“I hope our numbers will go from strength to strength in future years.”

Lib Dem councillor Paul Wells said: “We are the largest political party on the town council. It just shows the Lib Dems are still well looked upon in Bognor Regis.”

The new makeup of the town council, following the May 7 elections, is Independent five, Liberal Democrats five, Conservatives four, Labour one and UKIP one.
