Tag rugby at Polegrove

FOUL WEATHER conditions never dampened the spirits of primary schoolchildren taking part in the tag rugby festival at the Polegrove on Monday.

Twelve teams from mainly Bexhill schools played in the tournament which finished early because of persistent rain, but not before St Peter and St Paul school proved victorious.

Their A team won the competition and are now in the final, which takes place today at Claverham. A team from St Mary Magdalene's will also be competing at Battle.

Three other qualifiers were held during the tag rugby festival week in William Parker Sports college, Rye Rugby Club, and The Grove School in St Leonards, with overall more than 50 teams representing 45 local primary schools.

The festival week has been supported by Rother District Council and Hastings Borough Council and builds on the success of previous annual tournaments, and is seen as a chance for pupils to showcase their skills, and as a way of encouraging young people to play sport.

Richard White, Head teacher of St Peter and St Paul school, commented: "It is a very good event - well organised and played in a good spirit."

Pupil Thomas Elphick, 11, said afterwards: "It was good fun, apart from the weather."

His friend Elliott Lusted, also 11, agreed: "It was fun...but when you clap your hands together it really hurts because it is so cold."
