Take a trip back in time on vintage buses at Worthing Pier

The vehicles will be at Worthing pier’s Southern Pavilion from 10am-4pm on Sunday (July 5) as part of the celebrations to mark 100 years of Southdown Motor Services.

As well as the free bus rides, there will be an exhibition of photos and memorabilia, while former members of staff are being invited to get together for a reunion.

Among the staff will be 91-year-old May Gregory, who served as a clippie from 1942-1946.

May, who had been married for just a week when her husband went off to war, used to work with driver Harold Elms.

She remembered the early shift, which started at 5.55am, being “very cold, wet and dark” with no street lights; while the day ended with the 9.36pm troop bus to Washington.

The buses will all be provided by the Southdown Historic Vehicle Group.
