Worthing Journal editor Paul Holden organised the stunt in an effort to highlight the issue of ‘temporary’ patches, used to repair the town centre.

He said: “The Worthing Journal has been campaigning for years about unsightly Tarmac patching in Warwick Street, Montague Place, South Street and Chapel Road.

“But West Sussex County Council seems to think it is acceptable.

“Well, it isn’t, and the time has now come for the council to sort it out.”

Montague Street and Montague Place are due to undergo a multi-million pound renovation, after the town’s main shopping street become littered with mismatching paving slabs.

The Tarmac has also been used as a temporary measure to make repairs but many patches have been left for years, according to Mr Holden.

Worthing Pier county councillor Michael Cloake said he was addressing the issue.

“Since I came into office, I have been campaigning for improvements in Worthing town centre.

“I have a commitment from the relevant cabinet member to use no more Tarmac patches, other than temporary ones.

“While I understand Paul Holden’s concerns, it is a long process which I am working hard to sort.”
