Team scale new heights for hospice charity challenge

A TEAM of intrepid fundraisers are hoping to raise more than £10,000 for St Michael’s Hospice after successfully completing the gruelling three peak challenge.

Adrian Collins, from Senlac Vets, and farrier Steve Perkins, took on the challenge accompanied by fellow team members Darron Haines from Battle, former Battle Abbey pupil Oliver Rowlatt, Caroline Lelliott, livery yard manager at Wilton House stables in Catsfield, and team leader David Buckley, backed up by support drivers Charlotte Collins and Jane Rowlatt.

The team embarked on the challenge to raise money for St Michael’s Hospice in memory of Steve’s partner, and mum to Jade and Lily, Helen Jaworanski who died at the hospice in July 2009 aged just 37.

The team started the challenge from the bottom of Ben Nevis on April 11 and encountered heavy snow towards the top of Nevis which was only accessible with ice picks and crampons.

After a hasty descent and a quick meal break, the team were ushered into the waiting mini bus for the five hour drive to Scafell Pike.

The second peak was started in the dark at 2am, but by sunrise the team had made it safely to the top and were rewarded with breathtaking scenery and a beautiful sunrise.

Heavy snow at the top of the peak made climbing conditions treacherous, but by 6am the adventurers were back at base camp for a quick breakfast before embarking on another five hour trip to Snowdon.

After safely arriving at the third and final peak, a weary team started the final assent with blisters and all the aches and pains which go with such an extreme challenge.

Two hours later they arrived at the top of Snowdon once again having battled with heavy snow and freezing conditions.

They made a hasty retreat back down the mountain to an awaiting Champagne reception where they celebrated their sheer determination and will to succeed with a hot meal and a comfy bed at Pen i Pass YHA.

Jane Rowlatt said: “The team would like to thank all their sponsors. We hope to raise over £10,000 for St Michael’s Hospice - to donate, visit www.justgiving.com/adriancollinsthevet or
