Tense finish at charity cricket match

COUNCILLORS and officers resumed their annual rivalry on Sunday in a nail-biting charity cricket match which went right to the wire.

Adur and Worthing councils officers beat Worthing mayor Michael Donin’s team by just six runs, after setting a total of 99 at Goring Cricket Club, in Fernhurst Drive.

The event raised a record £459 for the mayor’s charities, with help from a £199 pledge from Brighton City Airport Ltd.

Mr Donin said: “This was my first live cricket match and everybody was having so much fun.

“I decided not to play, as I would have been swinging the bat like a baseball bat and would have been out first ball.”

The mayor’s team featured former and current councillors, alongside East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton.

Their run chase took a turn for the worse after Mr Loughton was given out LBW first ball.

Director for communities John Mitchell sealed their fate by bowling Herald reporter Oli Poole to claim victory.

Bowler for the officers’ team Stewart Williams picked up the man of the match trophy after taking six wickets.

The match, played in glorious sunshine, was followed by a charity race night in the pavilion.
