Terry Winstanley makes X Factor boot camp

Terry Winstanley, an HGV driver for Shoreham-based Scaffold It, appeared on the popular ITV show on Sunday and impressed judges with his rendition of Michael Bolton’s To Love Somebody.

He received four “yes” votes, putting him through to the next stage of the competition, boot camp, which will be screened tonight (Saturday, September 24).

The 51-year-old said: “I’ve been overwhelmed by the whole experience.

“When I got the four yes votes I was elated – I knew when the audience started cheering I’d hit the right notes.”

Terry, said he did not actually apply to be on the show himself – it was his grand-daughters, Jordan, 11, and Jodie, nine, who live in Angmering.

“They love the show so much,” he said.

“Last year, we were watching winner Matt Cardell on the show and they said they’d entered me for the competition – they think I’m great at singing and wanted me to go for it.”

Since his appearance on the show, Terry said he was mobbed by fans in London wanting photographs and autographs with him.

“I was on the telly again on Daybreak, and afterwards at Victoria Station it went mad – I was mobbed, there was suddenly all these people wanting to talk to me,” he said.

Terry used to sing at Worthing pubs, including The Elms in Broadwater 20 years ago, and now spends his free time writing songs at his friend’s recording studio in Surrey.
