Thousands watch Olympic torch in Arundel

An estimated 1,000 children from schools across the Arun District have already paraded through the town’s High Street, waving flags and chanting.

Hundreds of other spectators watched on - umbrellas and rain coats in hand - as the youngsters marched into Arundel Castle.

The Littlehampton Academy Steel Band has been entertaining crowds in the streets with other performers keeping those in the castle amused.

Nigel Lynn, chief executive for Arun District Council said: “Everyone is having a fantastic time despite the rain.

“There have already been two parades by children in the town. Even though they are soaked through, they are still pleased to be here.

He added: “This is all about enthusing and igniting children with the Olympic spirit.

“This event is certainly doing that.”

The torch is currently running behind schedule but it is expected to enter Arundel, at the western end of Maltravers Street, shortly after 3.30pm.

Worthing will be the next stop for the Olympic torch relay.
