TIM DREW: Reference group to assist with new plan

Last month I mentioned that one of the duties of the police and crime commissioners (PCCs) is to issue a police and crime plan setting out the strategic objectives for their term of office.

It is a requirement of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 to make “arrangements for obtaining, before a police and crime plan is issued, the views of the people in that police area, and the views of the victims of crime in that area, on that plan.”

Work on the new police and crime plan 2017/21 has begun and will involve shaping, developing and designing community safety priorities which reflect accurately the expectations of the public.

A police and crime plan reference group has been established to assist in the development of this plan, comprising representative members from Sussex Police, community safety and criminal justice partners.

The PCC has confirmed the four policing and crime objectives for 2017/21 as follows:

• Strengthening local policing.

• Working with local communities and partners to keep Sussex safe.

• Protecting our most vulnerable and helping victims cope and recover from crime and abuse.

• Improving access to justice for members of the public.

The aims, outcomes and measures which underpin each of these objectives are still being developed. The PCC is required to consider the views of the local community and victims of crime. Views on these aims, outcomes and measures will be sought via public consultation and engagement.

Meanwhile, Neighbourhood Watch wishes to apologise to those hoping to have their bicycles security marked on Saturday, as our event was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

However, bike marking services will be available at today’s Picnic in the Park in Tarring between 10am and 4pm, but please bring satisfactory evidence of ID with you.
