‘Time to see the light’ over mess complaints

‘MESSY’ street light installers have been slammed by a councillor for leaving his ward’s streets in an ‘unsightly’ state.

Worthing borough councillor for Goring, Mark Nolan, has hit out at the ‘unacceptable’ condition of pavements, following work by Scottish and Southern Energy to replace street lighting across the area.

Cllr Nolan, who has been inundated by complaints from residents, said: “A lot of the pavements in Goring are already paved with grey and pink slabs and the black tar is simply unsightly.

“The contract apparently requires slabs to be replaced ‘wherever possible’, yet it looks as though seven, eight or nine slabs at a time are being lifted and not replaced.”

As part of an EU directive, SSE has been contracted to replace all street lights across West Sussex on behalf of the county council.

Complaints over mess have been compounded by concerns over the placement of some of the new lights,

Cllr Nolan said he had heard of lights shining directly into residents’ bedroom windows, while in Ilex Way, it appeared part of a wall had been forced back to make way for a new light.

He said: “At one address, it appears that SSE have pushed the wall back to fit the street light, which is outrageous.

“Goring residents should not have to put up with this. It’s time for SSE to see the light.”
