THERE were 20 candles on the cake when the Open House toddler group celebrated its birthday at Findon Valley Free Church with nearly 100 mums and tots.

The special day was even celebrated by two people who were members of the toddler group when they were children, and their parents are still part of the committee now.

The group is run by Christine Fairs, Christine Worsfold and Linda Connelly.

Christine Fairs, a member of the committee that helped start Open House, said: “Twenty years ago, a woman called Maureen Carcas felt that God was saying to her I want you to start a group here in the church. And she called it Open house.

“I was pregnant with Annabel and Maureen asked me, Linda and Christine if we would be part of it.

“We took it on thinking we would only do it while our children were at pre-school.”

Now, 20 years later, Christine said the group is receiving a good response, with about 60 people turning up.

Christine’s daughter, and Linda’s son, still help out at the toddler group from time to time, and were members when they were young children.

Annabel Fairs, 19, said: “I think it’s amazing for the community because they haven’t really got anything for this age.”

Jonathan Connelly, 21, said: “It was nice to see familiar faces and catch up with what has gone on since I left.”
