Town centre set for latest parking battle

On-street parking restrictions could be extended past 6pm and shoppers may face an end to free parking during the day on Sundays.

The proposals are part of West Sussex County Council’s controlled parking zone consultation, in zones A, B and C.

Town centre manager Sharon Clarke said: “We certainly support no change. While we appreciate residents sometimes find it difficult to park in the town centre, we have got to support the business community.

“We are just starting to see a recovery and something like this could discourage people away from the town centre. The night-time economy also benefits from free parking after 6pm.”

The consultation came about after residents expressed concern about their parking difficulties, with many spaces taken up by shoppers and those enjoying the town’s bars, restaurants and theatres.

East Worthing county councillor Roger Oakley said: “There is a substantial number of residents who feel they can’t make use of the streets outside where they live because of visitors using all the spaces.

“It’s going to be a matter of what the review turns up and how strong the feeling is.”
