Town honours its first citizens

A BOARD chronicling the Mayors of Peacehaven was unveiled in the Meridian Centre by the town's MP, Des Turner.

The board, which features 14 mayors, was commissioned by the town council in recognition of the work of its first citizens.

Photographs were compiled from a variety of sources, including archives, family photos and official portraits.

Steve Keogh, the council's leisure and amenity manager, said: 'The idea of a tribute to the mayors has been on the agenda for some time. When I contacted the families they were only too pleased to find the pictures that they felt would be ideal for the project.

'Once gathered together the photos were transformed into this small piece of history. The finished item took a week to complete thanks to the fine work from Rottingdean Frames and PJ Trophies.'

Tribute was paid to two councillors who died recently.

Tony Howard and Alfred 'Jim' Ball both completed 11 years as councillors and their families accepted plaques as tokens of the town's gratitude. Tony Howard served as mayor and was leader of the council when he died.

A new mayoral chain, designed by Studio Crafts in Peacehaven, was unveiled. Each of its chain links has the Peacehaven Meridian Monument as the centre of the design.

The present Mayor, Pauline Howard, said: 'I have worn the chain on a number of occasions and the comments have always been complimentary.'
