The extensive roadworks will also include repositioning of road-side furniture.

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said warning signs were erected in advance to the works, letting residents in the local area know of the extent of the works, which are expected to last until early October.

Work will take place between 9.30am and 4.30pm.

He said: “In order to protect our workforce and the public, temporary traffic signals and a footway closure will be in operation.”

Commuters have flooded onto Facebook to complain about the severe delays they experienced on the way to work this morning.

The existing footway on the northern-side of The Causeway, Arundel (A27) is to be widened and the kerb realigned.

Street lighting columns and other road-side furniture currently located at the back of the footway will be repositioned.

The hedgerow will be removed to allow for the footway to be widened and a new hedgerow re-planted, together with new highway and field fences and a drainage ditch on the field-side of the existing hedgerow is to be enclosed in an underground pipe.

The eastbound bus stop, serving bus services towards Littlehampton, will be temporarily relocated. This will be relocated towards Arundel town centre, to The Causeway, on its approach to the A27 roundabout.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation from September 7 to September 11.

There is expected to be delays during the Goodwood Revival event on Friday, September 11, but measures will be taken to ease traffic.

The spokesman said: “The Goodwood Revival meeting is being held from 11th to 13th September and there is, therefore, the potential for traffic disruption on Friday.

“Due to the need to avoid clashing with other necessary road works that have been programmed on the trunk road network we have a very limited window of opportunity to undertake the pavement widening and kerb realignment works. We will endeavour to keep traffic disruption to a minimum.”
