AIRSHOW CRASH: Prayers across the Diocese of Chichester

Church leaders have offered their support following the Shoreham Airshow tragedy and prayers will be said across the Diocese of Chichester today.

At least seven people have died after a Hawker Hunter plane crashed on the A27 yesterday afternoon (Saturday August 22).

Churches across the county will say prayers for those injured, those who died and for the families caught up in the aftermath of the crash.

The Archdeacon of Chichester, Douglas McKittrick, said he had kept in close touch with the team of chaplains working at the airport, in local hospitals and in parishes in the immediate area.

He said: “This has been a truly terrible day and the extent of the shock and horror of it all is only just dawning on many in the local community.

“We offer prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for all those who are concerned about their loved ones.”

Bishop Mark broke his annual leave to offer his support and prayers, and said: “The tragedy of Saturday’s air crash has touched the entire county and country.

“Our hearts go out to all the victims of this crash and our prayers go up for them and for all those who have been traumatised by this sad event.

“Chaplains and other clergy will continue their support of all concerned and especially those in the emergency services.”

St Mary’s Church in Shoreham held a minute’s silence before the 10am service to remember those who lost their lives and candles were lit in the St George’s Chapel after the service.

The vicar of Shoreham Old church, Revd Ann Waiseneker, said the church of the Good Shepherd on Shoreham Beach and St Mary’s de Haura, Shoreham will be open all day for prayers.

She said: “Our love and prayers are with the whole community at this difficult time. Both churches will be open all day and everyone is welcome to attend at any time.”
