The Ferry Footbridge spans the River Arun in Littlehampton.

Known locally as The Red Bridge, it can retract so ships can pass through the central span and access nearby industrial areas.

It will be closed to the public for the duration of the works so perishable components, such as brake pads and callipers, can be replaced, West Sussex County Council said. The service is expected to take from Monday, October 26, to Friday, October 30, dependent on factors such as extreme weather.

A county council spokesman said: “This major service is essential to ensure the continued smooth and safe operation of the bridge.

“Shipping will still be able to pass through during the works and a free bus service will be provided for pedestrians.

“The bus will run every 30 minutes between 6am and 11pm. A timetable will be displayed at each end of the bridge, in Ferry Road and Wharf Road.”

The bus will be provided by Compass Travel and will be suitable for people with disabilities.

The service will be carried out by Qualter Hall, our specialist mechanical and electrical contractor.
