Long queues at tips in Worthing and Littlehampton – in pictures

Photos taken at the tips in Worthing and Littlehampton earlier this week show long queues, as sites across the county experience high demand.

West Sussex County Council said several of its household waste recycling sites had recently experienced queuing traffic, long waiting times and disruption to local residents, businesses and the highway network.

Readers have shared their frustration about the situation on social media.

Commenting online, Paloma Murillo VanderSteen said: “I went to Worthing this morning and before they’d even opened the queue went on for ages.

“Cars were having trouble turning into the road as there are temporary lights too. Nightmare for people working and wanting to access businesses around.”

Judith Howarth said: “I live in Angmering and went there Saturday, I waited around 30 minutes to get inside. When I left it was crazy, the queues were backed up past Morrisons.”

In response, the council has decided to bring in new measures at both tips.

A booking system will be trialled and summer opening hours brought forward to start this Friday.

It means the tip in Worthing’s Willowbrook Road will open from 9am to 6pm everyday, while the tip in Shoreham’s Brighton Road will open 9am to 6pm Wednesday to Sunday.

Meanwhile residents will be able to book one visit per week up to 14 days in advance, with a set number of slots allocated per half hour.

While booking should be up and running in the week commencing March 15, the system will not go live until March 29.
