Online road accident map launched

Details of all the deaths between 1999 and 2010 in the Worthing, Shoreham and Littlehampton areas feature on the road fatality statistics and mapping tool.

It reveals 75 people lost their lives in the Arun local authority area during that period, 29 people were killed on the roads in Worthing, while there were 24 deaths in Adur.

A group which promotes road safety has welcomed the map.

Neil Hopkins, communications manager for the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, said: “The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership welcome the introduction of a road casualty map – a move which we’re sure will create more debate about road safety issues across the country.

“We are very keen to allow the public to have access to information about the road safety records of the roads in their areas.

To this end, we have upgraded the camera map on our website www.sussexsaferroads.gov.uk to hold additional information on every camera site (mobile, fixed and red light) in Sussex.

“Shortly, we are planning to release information about all collisions resulting in injury that have occurred across Sussex in the last three years.

“Being able to access comprehensive, accurate, up-to-date information is key in helping authorities and individuals make informed decisions about their local areas.

“We will always work to facilitate this in order to make the roads safer for all.”

The map was put together using official data recorded by police across the UK, and shows that nationwide, during that time period, there were 36,371 fatalities on our roads.

To access the information, users are asked to either input a postcode or select the local authority area they want to view, and can then click on a coloured dot for each incidence of a road death.

It then brings up a box giving them the time and date of the accident, the age and sex of the person killed, what the road conditions were like at the time, details of the vehicles involved and information about any injuries suffered be people.
