Sussex travel update as Storm Francis hits

Motorists are being warned to drive with caution as Storm Francis brings heavy rain and strong winds to Sussex today.

A yellow warning for wind has been issued by the Met Officeread more here.

The HM Coastguard is warning people to be careful around the coast.

A spokesman said: “With strong winds of up to 70 mph in exposed coastal areas, combined with heavy rain, we’re expecting dangerous coastal conditions over the next few days ⚠️

“Keep back from the water, don’t take unnecessary risks & stay safe during #StormFrancis.”

Meanwhile ferries from Newhaven serving Dieppe have been cancelled later today due to the storm.

The ferries leaving Newhaven at 5.30pm and 11pm, and those leaving Dieppe at 11am, 6pm and 11.59pm are no longer running due to the adverse weather conditions.

The 9am departure is currently operating as normal.

Those travelling should contact the call centre for further information and ticket modifications.

On the roads in West Sussex, there is heavy traffic in Petworth following a collision on the A283 Angel Street near Sheepdown Drive.

Traffic is moving slowly ton the A27 Arundel Road due to reports of a deer on the road – drivers are being warned to approach with care.

In Southwater, the A24 remains closed between Mill Straight and B2237 Worthing Road (Hop Oast Park And Ride Roundabout).

The road closure has been in place since Saturday and is expected to last until Friday – read more here.

Meanwhile in East Sussex, there are alterations to Hastings line services due to a derailed train in Tonbridge.
