It is not known if there were any horses in the horsebox but a West Sussex Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said cattle had been involved.

Crews from Shoreham spent almost two hours at the scene and helped a farmer to get the cattle into a trailer.

The road is closed between the Holmbush and Devil’s Dyke exits in both directions, with traffic almost stationery for a mile before the Holmbush exit on the east-bound carriageway.

Herald reporter Sheena Campbell said: “It took me an hour to get from the flyover to the Holmbush exit.”
