Tributes to former Adur councillor

Don Phillips, of Boundstone Lane, Lancing, became a district councillor in the Peverel and Widewater wards and chairman of Adur District Council during the 1990s and early 2000s, after enjoying a varied Army career as a chartered engineer which took him around the world.

He died on March 7, aged 81, following a battle with pneumonia.

His family said he was a man who “made connections with people” and was always willing to help those in need, such as when he played a pivotal role in having plans to build a bypass through Lancing, in the late 1980s, rejected.

His daughter, Suesie Glagow, 53, said: “He was conscientious, compassionate and extremely strong, but also very tender.

“A new doctor met him two weeks ago and said of dad that it is people like him who have made this country great – a true gentleman and someone to be admired for his determination and unassuming self-reliance. He will be sorely missed.”

Don’s funeral will be held at St James the Less Church, in Mill Road, North Lancing, on Tuesday (March 20), at noon.
