Sir Peter invited Trump to the town in January after an e-petition calling for the American to be banned from the UK on the grounds of hate crime.

In the wake of last night’s surprise election result, Sir Peter repeated his invitation.

He said: “I still think it would be a good idea for Donald Trump to visit Worthing. I originally invited him so he’d come to meet the Islamic community, in particular the Imams and other members of Worthing Masjid.

“I think, given some of his recent remarks about women, he might like to meet the female population in and around Worthing, as well. A conversation with, for example, local WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaigners might make Trump think twice about his sexist comments.”

Despite a controversial campaign, Sir Peter said he was optimistic for Trump’s presidency.

He added: “During this morning’s victory speech, Trump said that he intends to work for people of all religions.

“I suspect that half the outrageous things he said before the election will be forgotten about, at least by him. Let us hope for the best, and judge people by their actions, not by their past words.”
