Tunnel and four lanes among A27 suggestions

A TUNNEL, four lanes and a downland bypass are among the options being considered for potential A27 improvements.

Six hypothetical options were discussed at the latest A27 Corridor Feasibility Stakeholder Reference Group meeting, in an attempt to solve congestion problems.

Group member and East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton said: “

“This latest A27 group meeting produced some very rich data again confirming how the Worthing/Lancing stretch of the A27 again scored highest for the problems of traffic congestion, journey delays and air quality, among other measures.

“We were also presented with some hypothetical routes, which were not final routes, but produced in order to produce relative costings before the preferred options are shortlisted and then presented to the Treasury.”

He added: “Crucially, most of the theoretical routes involved large sections of tunnelling, which is the only realistic way that we are going to get meaningful improvements on our stretch of the A27.”

Campaigners worried about the possible effect on the South Downs will walk the route on Saturday at 1.45pm, meeting at Hill Barn Lane car park.
