Two arrested after attempted robbery in Bognor

Just before 6am today (Wednesday, November 9), two men, one carrying a copper coloured metal bar, grabbed the postmaster at the Post Office in The Precinct, West Meads, as he opened the back door in preparation for deliveries.

They bustled him into the office and demanded keys to the safe.

However he did not have access to them and after a few minutes they ran off empty handed through the rear courtyard, leaving him shaken but unhurt. No weapons were seen.

A swift police search of the area resulted in two men being arrested in a silver Ford Mondeo in nearby West Meads Drive less than 45 minutes later.

The two men, aged 18 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and are in custody for interview and further enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Russ Burgess said: “The police response enabled two arrests to be made very quickly, but we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area of The Precinct at around 6am this morning and saw two men acting suspiciously.

“Both are described as white and about 5ft 8ins and 5ft 10ins, and appeared to be in their late teens to early twenties. One was wearing a grey hooded top and the other a dark coloured hooded top.”
