Ken Chapman and Jennifer Luck were described as ‘loyal and exceptional people’ by colleagues at the Sackville Road site.

Mr Chapman, who is known as KC, is one of the leading names of PE specialists in Worthing and the surrounding area after leading numerous sports’ teams to success after starting his career in 1972.

Head teacher Steve Mercer said: “Principles of fair game-ship and technical superiority has underpinned the soul of every player where the only tactics Mr Chapman encouraged was those of skill and honesty.

“A straight-talker, Mr Chapman has always been driven to do the best for each student and there are few teachers that could match the years of dedicated service he has given so many students, as teacher, Head of PE and head of year.

“Equally, Mrs Luck has been a colleague who has served the staff and students with integrity and dependency over the past 31 years.

“As the welcoming face of Student Services, Mrs Luck has been central to this important part of the school, ensuring students, parents and staff are simultaneously assisted and always with humour and care.

“Most recently, Mrs Luck has supported the senior team as PA, particularly the teaching and learning team, with the important work which has happened over the past academic year, her support has been invaluable.”

The two careers were celebrated with a ‘This is Your Life’ style event for Mr Chapman, arranged by staff of the PE department to mark the huge impact he has had on so many young men’s lives.

A surprise assembly was also arranged for both staff members, with students, colleagues and family attending for songs, poetry readings and messages of good luck and thanks.

Afternoon tea and a 100-person barbecue followed in the afternoon and evening.

Mr Mercer said: “The sheer number of ex-colleagues who attended the afternoon is a true testament of how much both KC and Jennifer are loved and respected.

“Their last days were very emotional for the staff and students of St Andrew’s.

“They will both leave an un-fillable void however, their wise words and wisdom will be a legacy in the hearts of all those they have met and worked with. “It is only right to finish on the words of Jennifer Luck whose sentiments sum up the spirit of both of these special people: “If I could turn back the clock, I would do it all over again”.

“Much love to you both, Ken and Jennifer – we have been blessed to have been given so much of your time. Have a fabulous retirement. God bless.”
