Coastguards alerted the lifeboat to the pair who had been cut off by the tide after climbing down the cliffs to reach the beach.

Given the weather conditions it was felt that the lifeboat would be able to get through the surf and land on the beach, rather than waiting for the Coastguard cliff rescue team, or helicopter to arrive.

The lifeboat crew were successfully able to reach the trapped teenagers and after taking them on board took them safely back to Hastings Lifeboat Station.

Hastings lifeboat coxswain Steve Warne said: “This was a good technical rescue by members of the inshore lifeboat.

“The two teenagers were trapped and in trouble, and this time we were able to help.

“The incident shows however that if you do go down to the sea, you need to be aware of your surroundings, know what the tide is doing, and always ‘Respect the Water’.”
