Udimore

I was sad to hear of the death in hospital of another Udimore resident on July 19. George Thomas’ friendly helpfulness will be greatly missed by his neighbours in Lower Cross, and even more by Gladys, now his widow, who he had been looking after with great solicitude ever since her serious stroke several years ago. They were a devoted couple. The lung cancer which finally proved fatal to George originated from his exposure to asbestos dust as a boy in South Africa, where he was born and brought up.

The one service in St Mary’s Church this Sunday is the Sung Family Eucharist, at which everyone will be a welcome, as well as to refreshments in the Community Hall afterwards. Messy Church takes place in the Hall at 4pm on Tuesday.

Do make a point of looking in at the coffee morning at Stocks Oast on Thursday (August 7), between 10am and noon. This will be the sixth of Ann Barker’s fundraising events for the Hall, substantially helped by Richard and Sheila Corke’s kind donation of another splendid raffle prize, a jointed and bagged lamb, all ready for the lucky winner’s freezer. Tickets for this and another raffle will be on sale at the event, or by ringing 01424 883515 beforehand.
