A spokesperson said that while the repairs were ‘unlikely’ to take two weeks, the order allowed for ‘unforeseen events.’

One lane is closed on the A2032 Littlehampton Road westbound between Littlehampton road roundabout and Yeoman roundabout.

The spokesperson added that there are two high voltage power cables running directly on top of the damaged water main and that the company are having to work closely with utility partners to be able to allow access to repair the main.

A spokesperson from Southern Water said: “We’re sorry for the disruption caused by the burst water main and associated road closure and diversion, and would like to thank people for their continued patience while our team carries out this complex repair.

“We are progressing with the work as quickly as possible and yesterday (Monday 28 November) met with the Council, Highways England, Utility Partners and our contractors to ensure effective co-ordination and help minimise traffic disruption – whilst allowing the necessary time and space to safely complete these vital repairs.

“For this reason we have made an application for a 14 day road closure order.

“Although the actual length of the repair and reinstatement is unlikely to take two weeks, a 14 day application allows for additional time in case of unforeseen events.

“Unfortunately we do not currently have a more specific timescale for this work to be done, but we would like to reassure people that we are working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

“We will update customers and road users once we near the end of the repair and know when the road will be reopened.”
